Room Fans Help Prevent SIDS!

Besides placing babies on their backs when sleeping, an article from The Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine now recommends adding fans to baby rooms. According to USA Today, October 7, 2008's issue, the study backing this recommendation cites babies that sleep with a fan are 72% less likely to die from SIDS. The fans apparently help to prevent rebreathing exhaled carbon dioxide, allowing the baby to have access to fresh oxygen. Pacifiers are also helpful in preventing the baby's face from being pressed against the mattress.

Do not forget to remind your Day Care providers to follow this advice, as 20% of SIDS deaths occur when the child is in the care of someone other than a parent. The article also advises that stuffed animals, blankets, pillows, and crib bumpers be kept out of cribs. Women and Vitamin D

Did you know that low Vitamin D levels are a risk factor for women? In USA Today's article "Adults still risk vitamin D deficiency," dated June 16, 2008, author Mary Brophy Marcus states that this deficit has "been linked to an increased risk for osteoporosis, osteomalacia--the softening of bones--and certain cancers, autoimmune diseases and cardiovascular problems." Furthermore, the NIH states that "Vitamin D also may play a role in preventing diabetes and hypertension...." This deficit may be linked to diet and poor sun exposure. As a proactive consumer, ask your physician what your Vitamin D level is and whether you need supplements. You have a right to know!
